The Story of the Shepherd Boy

Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His being was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to care for his herd of sheep.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind among the single tree on the hilltop were his main companions. Day upon day, looking out for his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

However, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plan.

Narratives of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but found no wolf.

The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. But, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But here this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
